CUT AND PASTE
collages by David Staples
Opening: Sunday January 07 - 6 pm-10pm
January 7th til February 2nd, 2007
These works are a retaliation against the corporate marketing and advertising
war being waged for our minds and dollars. Ads plunder art, music, and film
and manipulate the familiar and the seductive to profit from our desires.
They dissect the human body and psyche to prey on our fears. To make matters
worse, many admired celebrities who call themselves "artists" happily endorse
products and ideas that hurt people, animals, and our environment instead
of expressing independent opinions. I've attempted to turn computer age ads
into art by cutting, arranging, and painting the images in a way that exposes
the emptiness of their promises and also uses them to rebuild the shrinking
part of pop culture based on intelligence, humor, and natural beauty.
